We have created a brand new biochar compost, that has been formulated specifically for tree planting as part of a trial with Wild Urban Spaces, a company that specialises in the Miyawaki method of planting trees.
This planting concept is proven to rapidly introduce trees to an area of land that hasn’t previously included trees such as our cities and urban areas, the collective term for this is afforestation. The Miyawaki method has a proven track record in rapidly afforesting spaces.
Wild Urban Spaces takes this method of regreening using trees and replicates it by selecting native species and by taking soil samples to analyse, this allows the team to identify the amendments needed to create ideal soil conditions focusing on fertility, water and mineral retention. Adding the amendments helps to reduce soil compaction and create ideal conditions for growth with a particular focus on adding trees to urban areas.
We have created a specific biochar enriched compost for the trial which combines 80% PAS100 – a quality green waste compost mixed with 20% 0-8mm biochar granules as a possible soil amendment for the project, this is an ideal combination for tree planting and also for improving heavy clay soils often found in the gardens of new build properties.
