The products are:
Biochar. A range of biochars suitable for use in growing media and soil to improve the growth and health of crops and plants. We offer a bespoke service for the provision of granular powder and chips, and make biochar from wood or other organic matter based on your requirements. As part of our biochar production expertise, we also provide charcoal filters for use in odour removal at compost and anaerobic digestion plants.
Compost Humification Agent. Exclusive to SoilFixer, this patent-pending formulation is made with biochar and other proprietary additives. It increases the volume of essential colloidal humus in compost.
SoilFixer 30 and SoilFixer 60 Additives. A range of additives formulated to maintain loam and improve either clayey or sandy soil. They are a combination of colloidal humus, biochar, NKPs, trace minerals and beneficial
micro-organisms these act like a ‘nutrient sponge’ and 'soil aggregation glue'
to help improve soil tilth and fertility.
We use sustainable resources. We recycle, we minimise waste and we’re not destroying forests or natural habitats. So, we therefore believe it’s fair to describe SoilFixer products and processes as sustainable.SoilFixer products are good for the environment. You can make a positive difference to your carbon footprint very easily. A 10 Kg tub of biochar (100% carbon) equals 30 Kg of CO2 sequestered (locked, offset) into the soil. A single seat flight from the UK to Europe generates around 200 Kg of CO2.
SoilFixer is a new company focused on improving the quality of compost and top soils. We make a range of products that we’ve developed based on our extensive knowledge and experiments with compost, humus, biochar and soil.
Our vision is to improve horticulture and gardening by making soil the best it can be. Soil is the foundation in which plants grow to produce the oxygen we breathe, the crops we eat and the flowers we so enjoy. So we need to nurture and ensure it remains in top condition!
SoilFixer is run by a passionate and driven team.
Tony Callaghan, Director
Tony directs the development and production of SoilFixer’s pioneering products. A soil scientist, Tony’s passion for soil and composting science has seen him successfully patent the hot bin composting system (UK patent 2496234), which is now one of the UK’s top selling compost bins.
For family reasons, Tony Callaghan has relocated to South West England. Our associate consultants Ruth, Rob and Eddy (see below for their details) remain in North East. We are building a new team down South, but maintain excellent relations with the old team up North, helping each other where possible.
From 1 November 2017, SoilFixer is located at Unit 4 Farm491 RAU Business Innovation Unit.
Ruth Thompson, Associate Consultant (previous)
Ruth’s interest and commitment in biochar stems from her in-depth understanding and experience of coppicing and gardening, linking biomass creation to preserving soil fertility by using biochar to produce a carbon negative growing system. When not fixing soil, Ruth creates magnificent hazel sculptures - see them at: Sylvan Skills website
Darren Hopkins, Associate Consultant (previous)
Darren helped SoilFixer with product quality and environmental and legislative compliance. He assists in the running of the British Biochar Foundation and was the initiator of the Environment Agency's Position Statement on waste to biochar.Darren is also one of the four main authors of the Biochar Quality Mandate (BQM) and is responsible for the concept of using biochar in waste management strategy to reduce a business footprint and achieve ISO14001 and ISO14064 accreditation.
Rob Taylor, Associate Consultant (previous)
Rob, director of SNCG Ecoscapes Ltd, began making Biochar after becoming familiar with the concept through soil ecology courses, articles from the permaculture website, and holistic agroecology books. He sees Biochar’s place augmenting natural processes to enhance any permaculture garden, fixing depleted or over-used soils and land and lowering our carbon footprint, a subject he is very passionate about.
Eddy Armstrong, Associate Consultant (previous)
Eddy, director of SNCG Ecoscapes Ltd, became involved in making Biochar after hearing about it through various permaculture websites and views it as a way of using every part of coppiced trees as well as lowering our carbon foot print.
